How to Protect User Data in AI-Generated Apps

An app being AI-generated doesn't exempt it from the same data protection responsibilities as one built by hand. If you're storing real user information, these basics still apply.

Authentication first

Make sure sign-up and login are actually secure — proper password hashing, session handling, and (ideally) an option for multi-factor authentication before you launch to real users.

Least-privilege permissions

Every user role in your app should only be able to see and do what's strictly necessary for their job. Review this explicitly rather than assuming a generated permission structure is airtight.

Know where data actually lives

Understand which backend or database your builder is using under the hood, where it's hosted, and what its own security practices are — you're responsible for your users' data regardless of which platform stores it.

Have a privacy policy that matches reality

Your privacy policy needs to accurately describe what data you collect and how it's used — a generic template that doesn't match your actual app is a real legal and trust risk, not just a formality.

Plan for a breach before you need to

Know in advance how you'd notify affected users and what your process would be if something went wrong. Deciding this after an incident is much harder than deciding it now.
